There is no place like Home for the holidays…

But if you need a second choice, New York City is the place to be.  There are several reasons for this.

First, New Yorkers celebrate whenever they have the opportunity.  Seldom a weekend goes by without a parade, art or music festival, a run, or other public event, sanctioned or improvised.

Second, the City dresses for the occasion.  A place known for its fashion, nothing is lost in the décor of The City itself.  Sidewalks, store windows, parks, and other public places all seem to come alive for the holidays.

There is no reason to feel alone for the holidays with 10 million people not including the droves of visitors who come to celebrate in The City.  3.5 million of them were expected to attend the parade today.

Celebrating in the City rarely means a good seat (or even good standing room) at a public event, but it does mean experiencing it.  This is where people from all over the world gather to share a moment, communicating in separate languages not understood by either, but with smiles and gestures understood across humankind.  People from other places become friends for a moment, and somehow it feels like the world is just a bit more peaceful.

Walking past Macy’s to gaze at their Christmas windows means sharing the sidewalks with hundreds of others seeking the same holiday experience.

If you had the pleasure of sharing this holiday with your loved ones, we hope you are thankful for their company.  Your aunt that talks too much, your uncle that laughs too loud, the granny that insists you eat the dressing you hate, are all part of the culture that is yours. It is something to be cherished.

If you didn’t have that pleasure, we will share with you our moments chasing the holidays in The City.

  1. Lovely post. And sums up my feelings about the city when I first arrived so well. I feel like New York City, with its abundance of visitors, pulls off the impossible: it makes the world seems small and accessible. So glad you had a good Thanksgiving!
